Abstract:
"Probably in 1812, the Danish scientist Hans Christian Ørsted wrote an elementary textbook in chemistry, entitled Kraft læren (The Theory of Force) and intended as a sequel to his Viden skaben om Naturens Almindelige Love (The Science of the General Laws of Nature) from 1809. However, the book was never published and may exist today in only one privately owned proof print. The present publication includes a reproduction of this most rare book, in its original Danish and in English translation, as well as an in troductory chapter, in which it is placed in the context of Ørsted’s chemical philosophy. The book is an important source for under standing Ørsted’s romantic-dynamical concept of chemistry and also provides valuable information on the dissemination in Denmark of international research in chemistry. Moreover, it provides insight into how chemistry was taught at Copenhagen University at a time when it was still part of physics. From a linguistic point of view, the book is of interest because it includes Ørsted’s first attempt to introduce a Danish chemical terminology."
